5th Day in Germany, München 07.06.2010
The day started off at half past nine after our usual buffet breakfast at our hotel. We headed to the U-Bahn station to take a train to the University station, Universitat. We had to attend a lecture at 10am, which is about “Quantum Cryptography”. After the talk, we went to the rooftop of the building to have a look at the set up and have a better understanding of how it works.
At the roof top with Professor Kleiner
We were done by noon and headed off for our lunch at the Mensa. Our student helpers, Max and Eyleeen suggested that we could visit the Nymphenburg Palace at Schloss Nymphenburg, which is rather nearby. We took the U-bahn and changed to a tram to reach our destination. On our way to the entrance, we were busy taking photos of the beautiful surroundings. It was really a pretty sight!
Schloss Nymphenburg
We purchased the entrance tickets and also the audio guide at a discounted price due to group discounts. It was rather interesting to see how King Ludwig I built his palace, along with many other displays that were really impressive.
Posing with our audio guides
We were given free time to walk around and make our own way back to the university at 5 in the evening for another lecture, Colloquium Talk. It was given by Prof Serge Haroche (ENS, Paris) on “Fundamental Tests of Quantum Mechanics in a 'Photon Box' “. There were many German students and professors attending as well. There was an interesting action that we picked up from them, as they were knocking on the table instead of clapping their hands as applause.
After the lecture, it was dinner time. Some of us went for a dinner at a university restaurant just around the corner, while the others wanted to do some shopping. We heard that they served large portions of food at cheap prices, hence, we would like to give it a try. The portions were actually only reasonable, not as large as we imagined. It had a menu that was almost identical to the one we had on the previous night for our welcome dinner. After dinner, the group separated and we each headed to explore the city further.
Currywurst with prommes
We went to recee BMW muesuem so that we can make it asap to the place the following day, we went to the BMW shop too since it is still open and took many shots outside :D Enjoy our pics!!!

2nd Day in Germany, München 04.06.2010
Went for my 1st morning run in Germany at 7.20am with Dayang and Yongwei :)
We met Prof and the group at 9.30 am after our exactly similar breakfast as yesterday and took the train from S to U and alighted at Universitat.
Universitat is where LMU, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität is located. Today was our first visit to the university and the dean is welcoming us by giving us an introduction in the morning.
We walked to the lecture hall and waited for everyone to settle down. We brought our big jackets along as we thought it would be freezing cold, but guess it got warmer as the sun was began shining above our head :) This is the summer that we are talking about!!!
We were given a LMU shirt, which is slightly small for the girls and extremely large for the guys, cause they run out of stock.
These are some pictures to show the surroundings and interior of LMU. It is really nice as it doesn't feel like a school but more like a musuem, very classy to be a student there :) Very different from our local universities, very modernised and high tech look.
The dean brought us for a stroll and also to the Mensa (school canteen) for our lunch.
On our way, I spotted a bicycle path for the cyclists in Munich. It is really interesting as most of the students travel around by bikes as the cos of public transport is pretty expensive for them. How i wish i could travel around in bicycle too, it is really a new experience for us. Furthermore, they can bring their bicycles on the train after the peak period.
We top up our Mensa card with 10 euros at the start of our 2 weeks in Munich, but u know what, we all got back pretty close to our cost or even more, some earn a profit too :P cos the card has a deposit to it, but as it was given to us by the university, we didn't have to pay the deposit but got to keep it :P
Took some photos while waiting for the rest to top up their cards too...
Queued up for our food, kinda of like prison- style....take a tray and choose what u want, hehe :P but of cos, the difference is, we have to pay for it :P
I chose this dish which I first thought was pork with some special sauce, but it happened to be a vegetarian dish, in jam sauce...something like pancakes ba, taste pretty nice though. Their coke tasted slightly different from Singapore's, I think it was nicer actually :) Oh ya, their bottles can be recycled and u will get a refund or 0.25 euros, depending on what kind of bottles, but that is pretty interesting, at least it makes everyone return their bottles...
We made a trip to Englischer Garten which is just a few minutes walk away from LMU. We came to the main attraction, Chinesischer Turm. It is actually the Chinese Tower. There were alot of people gathered around this area as there was FOOD!!! :P It is like a bier garden...Something like our hawker centre but with better atmosphere and with GERMAN BEER!!!
We had the pork knuckle as usual, because it is a MUST to eat when u are in Germany. We girls shared the pork knuckle and a chicken, not forgetting, our 1 litre beer :)
Cheers to our trip, it is such an amazing experience for us, even if it is just the beginning...
Oops...the cups were almost empty in the picture, hehe, we all became heavy drinkers le :P I brought back one as a souvenir as the deposit of the cup was just 1 euro, so...hehe, it is much cheaper than me buying a new cup ma, me cheapskate la... :D
We took our 1st bus ride to LMU, back to where we came from...as we were lazy to walk all the way back to LMU as we were kind of in the centre of the garden.
